What is Kamon ?

This picture is TOKUGAWA kamon.
Kamon, or family crests, are traditional symbols that represent Japanese families and their heritage. Originating in the Heian period (794–1185), they were used by noble families to distinguish themselves, especially on clothing, armor, and household items. Over time, samurai families and commoners also adopted their own crests.
Kamon designs often feature plants, animals, or geometric motifs, each carrying specific meanings connected to the family’s values or achievements. Even today, Kamon are used in ceremonies, on kimono, and in architecture, reflecting Japan’s deep respect for ancestry and tradition.
